Amazon S3 Had Remarkable Growth in 2011!

The Virtual World
Last year was a good year for Amazon and Cloud Computing! There was TREMENDOUS growth in 2011 for Amazon S3 services! "Amazon Web Services just reported jaw-dropping growth in the number of objects stored in Amazon S3 year over year. Amazon S3 Reports Staggering Growth in 2011 'As of the end of 2011, there are 762 billion (762,000,000,000) objects in Amazon S3. We process over 500,000 requests per second for these objects at peak times,' AWS Evangelist Jeff Bar wrote on the company's blog tonight. The company reported 262 billion objects in storage in Q4 of 2010. "This represents year-over-year growth of 192%; S3 grew faster last year than it did in any year since it launched in 2006." Independent analysts say this is indicative of the growth of the…

Five Free Virtualization Tools to Add to Your Arsenal!

The Virtual World
Free is good! I like FREE! These tools can help you manage your virtual environments! Update: 7 More Free Virtualization Tools "I'm a huge proponent of free virtualization tools. I have spoke about them at three VMworld shows and at TechMentor with Kendrick Coleman. Recently, we did a free tools update Webinar in which we talked about what's new in the free virtualization tools landscape. Over time, older free tools disappear and new free tools are launched. In many cases the newer tools are better and more innovative but, on the other hand, there are always free tools that are the de facto standard for that task. There are well over 50 free tools available for vSphere, but I'm not covering all of them here. Instead, here are some of…

A Pre-Configured Private Cloud from Dell

The Virtual World
I'll have a private Cloud to go! That seems to be the thinking at Dell! Why not package and sell ready-to-eat (so to speak) Cloud Systems for your datacenter? Dell launches pre-packaged private cloud for your datacenter "As part of their 'Virtualization made easy' push, Dell announced their new vStart 200 package which brings out of the box support for up to 200 VMs (using Microsoft or VMware technologies) right out of the box. This means that the hardware has been certified to work with both vSphere and Microsoft hypervisors. The vStart line also includes pre-configured packages targeted at supporting 50 and 100 VMs. The vStart products show up at your site preconfigured to your specifications and ready to run. The installation support includes a Dell field service engineer to…

Amazon Storage Gateway for Secure, Low Latency Storage

The Virtual World
The AWS Storage Gateway is a means to securely store data "in The Cloud" directly from your local storage systems. Amazon Fuses Your Storage System With Its Cloud "Amazon Web Services is rolling out a new feature called Storage Gateway that lets companies upload data to its cloud-storage services directly from their on-premise storage systems, the company said on Wednesday. AWS’s goals with Storage Gateway appear threefold: cloud backup, cloud bursting and, ultimately, primary cloud storage — all without having to worry about latency concerns. The way AWS Storage Gateway works is by securely storing data as a snapshot image within S3, then porting that data to the AWS Elastic Block Storage service if desired. Once there, users can process that data using Amazon EC2 cloud computing instances. Storage Gateway…

VMware Solution Exchange for Virtualization and Cloud Solutions

The Virtual World
VMware has opened a new marketplace of solutions for Cloud and Virtualization users. VMware Opens Cloud, Virtualization Marketplace "VMware is opening its Solution Exchange, an online marketplace that offers virtualization and cloud solutions, to help the company attract new customers and fend off competition from Red Hat, Microsoft and IBM. VMware is joining a number of other virtualization and cloud vendors in trying to leverage online marketing muscle to expand its customer base, while offering new products to its partners and developers. On Jan. 25, VMware officially launched its Solution Exchange, an online virtualization and cloud marketplace that is designed to help customers, partners and developers locate and purchase VMware-certified products. VMware’s new marketplace follows closely on the heels of the Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.0 (RHEV 3.0) offering from…

Amazon Dynamo DB Announced!

Product News
As an Amazon customer, I got a notice about this earlier this morning. Now, your database can reside "in teh Cloud" and have serious uptime guarantees! Amazon Dynamo DB: Big Data's Big Cloud Moment "Amazon Web Services launched the DynamoDB NoSQL database service on Wednesday, marking the company's boldest appeal yet for companies to trust a cloud-based service as a platform for running a business. The question now is whether Amazon really can deliver big-data scale at a reasonable cost through a cloud-based operation. The DynamoDB service is akin to giving Amazon's 3-year-old SimpleDB service a massive boost in terms of capacity and performance. That's because this new service is based on Dynamo, the NoSQL database Amazon developed internally and has used to run parts of its massive consumer commerce…

Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Overview

The Virtual World
Competing against VMware, Hyper-V and Citrix Xen, RHEV has a way to go to dominate market share, but it is an intriguing technology! Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization: overview of RHEV-M, RHEV-H and RHEL "Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization is a powerful and versatile server virtualization platform that’s often overshadowed by vSphere and Hyper-V. Because the underlying KVM hypervisor is integrated into the Linux kernel, Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV) can sometimes offer superior cost, security and performance than other virtualization offerings. But to get the most out of RHEV, you must understand how it’s architected. he RHEV Manager, also known as the RHEV-M management console, is the core component of Red Hat’s server virtualization platform. It provides a Web interface for managing virtual machines (VMs) that are running on physical nodes.…
