Windows 8 to Have Cloud Based User Profiles

The Virtual World
I work will profiles all the time due to my work as a Citrix admin, they can be tricky! But, this may be an interesting "take" on roaming profiles if they work out! I am not sure about having my PC user profile stored at Microsoft! Kinda makes me shutter a little! Windows 8 cloud-powered roaming user profiles revealed "While it was already known that Windows 8 would feature heavy Windows Live cloud integration, the actual extent of that integration will likely continue to take shape as development progresses on the upcoming OS. One more aspect has now been uncovered, thanks to Windows 8 enthusiasts over at My Digital Life: Windows 8 will support roaming profiles when linked to your Windows Live account. Roaming profiles have been an enterprise feature…

VMware Buys SlideRocket

The Virtual World
The question seems to be, "What will they do with it?" VMware Buys Another Slice of the Cloud With SlideRocket "In a surprise move, virtualization and cloud infrastructure specialist VMware has purchased online presentations tool SlideRocket. VMware purchased e-mail collaboration suite Zimbra earlier this year and this latest acquisition indicates VMware is staking a claim in the productivity cloud marketplace. At present there's a complicated Chess game taking place when it comes to cloud computing. Some companies, like Google with its Docs suite, have dived straight in. However, Google has the money to evolve products--Docs started off as an online analog of Microsoft Office, for example, before it became clear that collaboration would define the product."

Do Amazon’s EC2 Issues Make You Think?

The Virtual World
In his article, "Amazon Restores Cloud Services, Promises Postmortem" reporter Jeffery Schwartz in "Redmond Channel Partner" reports that: "Nonetheless, Amazon's outage was significant enough that it will likely cause those who have reserved judgment over the use of cloud computing services to sustain those reservations. For others, it will place greater emphasis on service-level agreements and redundancy." Is Amazon's Elastic Computer Cloud (EC2) failure enough to disuade you from considering Cloud Computing? Amazon Restores Cloud Services, Promises Postmortem I believe we are just in The Cloud's early stages, so it may be too early to become a doubter... let's wait and see what happens!

VMware Announces “Cloud Foundry”

The Virtual World
VMware launched and Open Source Cloud Platform project that they are calling "Cloud Foundry." VMware launches open-source cloud platform "VMware is launching into the space pioneered by NASA with an open-source cloud-computing platform designed to reduce the cost and complications of getting into the cloud, expanding VMware's own market in the process. The product, Cloud Foundry, is designed as platform as a service (PaaS) software for either internal corporate networks or public clouds being run as a service. Not coincidentally, the main features VMware touts for Cloud Foundry are those it criticizes in Microsoft's Azure PaaS offering: the need to use a specific set of application development tools and operating systems within the cloud. 'Non-standard development frameworks, a limited set of application services or a single, vendor-operated cloud service...inhibit application…

Will the “Cloud Client” Revolutionize Our Workflow?

The Virtual World
OPINION - By: Dr. Bill Bailey Or, perhaps the better question, "Will it change our very lifestyle?" What if you could work anytime, anywhere, and always have all your data, and programs to manipulate your data, at your fingertips? What if you weren't "tied" to your PC at all? In fact, what if you could work from any computer that simply had a network connection, securely, and not be "bound" in any way to a single device? Would that effect your work habits? Would you be more efficient, and productive? Well, we are very close to that reality! Any of a number of "cloud based" platforms could allow us to live out that scenario. And, once we are living in that reality, we will never want to go back to…
