Amazon Creates Controversy with “Cloud Drive”

The Virtual World
Amazon is now offering a "Cloud Drive" to users with Amazon accounts... you get a free 5 gig drive "in the cloud" so that you may store MP3 files, videos, photos, etc. Plans are available for up to a terabyte as a "Cloud Drive." They say: "5 GB of free online storage Unlimited access from any computer Never worry about losing your files again" The controversy is that if you store MP3 files on your "Cloud Drive" and access them from anywhere that you have an Internet connection, the music industry says that Amazon is helping folks misuse their music licensing and content. The bottom line becomes, do you own the files, or not? What does the music industries' copyright allow and not allow?

Target Chooses Hyper-V as its Virtualization Platform

The Virtual World
In a deal that Microsoft is touting as a validation of its platform, retail giant, Target, has chosen Hyper-V to virtualize its retail sales systems. Target will develop, essentially, a "Cloud Based" platform that will allow remote management and cut down on hardware at each retail location. Microsoft is trumpeting this deal as a sign that major, business critical applications can be handled by its platform. Microsoft's goal is to become a leader in virtualization technologies. While still behind VMware, in terms of customer adoption, Microsoft has made some in-roads with customers such as, Del Monte Foods and Costco.

Virtualizing Citrix on VMware

The Virtual World
Elias Khnaser has a good article in Virtualization Review that is entitled, "How To Virtualize Citrix XenApp on vSphere 4.1." Rather than list his recommendations here, here is a link to his article: How To Virtualize Citrix XenApp on vSphere 4.1 "As organizations continue on the journey of virtualizing more servers, there's a need for more attention and customization in order to yield the desired performance benefits while taking advantage of the virtualization drivers. This is especially true for those servers that host applications dubbed as tier-1 applications, such as SQL, Exchange and Citrix XenApp. Citrix XenApp is particularly interesting when virtualized due to the nature of the server that typically consumes a lot of CPU, memory and disk I/O. So, addressing these categories in particular is imperative. Here are…
